Join the Sanctuary Movement

Any organisation, institution, community group or individual can join the City of Sanctuary movement.

If you believe in a UK that offers welcome, support and opportunity to people seeking sanctuary — and you’re willing to stand by those values — you already belong here.

Whether you’re an individual wanting to take action in your everyday life, or an organisation beginning your journey towards becoming a recognised Place of Sanctuary — this is your starting point.

You don’t have to do everything. Just start where you are.

Sanctuary Awards

Our Sanctuary Awards programme recognises and celebrates the organisations and institutions who go above and beyond to foster welcome, understanding and opportunity. In the last month we have had the honour of awarding:

Merthyr College, a College of Sanctuary

Sheffield DocFest, a Festival of Sanctuary

Whitaker Gallery, a Gallery of Sanctuary

St Vincent's Catholic Primary School, Birmingham, a reaccredited School of Sanctuary.

Each one of these awards is assessed by a panel which includes as a minimum, an expert in the field, someone with lived experience of seeking sanctuary and a local member of City of Sanctuary. An award lasts three years when it then must then be re-assesed. Find out more about the awards process here
