Sanctuary Awards

Our Sanctuary Awards programme recognises and celebrates the organisations and institutions who go above and beyond to foster welcome, compassion and opportunity. In the last few months we have had the honour of awarding:

Evesham Methodist Church is a Church of Sanctuary and Dunmurry Mosque in Belfast is a Mosque of Sanctuary

Pendleton Library is now a Library of Sanctuary

University of Cambridge is now a University of Sanctuary!

North West Regional College, Derry is a College of Sanctuary

Pennycross Primary School, Plymouth; St Paul's Catholic Primary School, Birmingham; Fishergate Primary School, York; St Columba's Primary School; The Friars Primary School; St Philips CE Primary School; All Hallows High RC High School and Oasis Media City Academy are all Schools of Sanctuary.

Amma Birth Companions and Newham Nurture have been reaccredited as Maternity Projects of Sanctuary

Merton Council and Kingston Council are now a Local Authority of Sanctuary and Liverpool Council have had their award reaccrdited

The Common Lot, Norwich is now a Theatre Company of Sanctuary and Phosphoros theatre, Sherman theatre, Norwich Theatre and Theatre Royal Wakefield have all been reaccredited.

Ice and Fire have had their Theatre Company of Sanctuary award reaccredited.

Milton Keynes Islamic Art Centre is newly awarded and Baltic have had their Art Gallery of Sanctuary award reaccredited.

Grapes Hill Community Garden, Norwich is now a Garden of Sanctuary

Bicycle Links, Norwich, is a Workplace of Sanctuary

Each one of these awards is assessed by a panel which includes as a minimum, an expert in the field, someone with lived experience of seeking sanctuary and a local member of City of Sanctuary. An award lasts three years when it then must then be re-assesed. Find out more about the awards process here

Proposed Asylum Changes
Write to your MP opposing these unworkable plans.

Sign the petition calling on the Home Secretary not to seize jewellery, or scapegoat refugees and migrants with this policy.

From Legal Aid Crisis to Community Power
On Dec 4, join our interactive workshop for City of Sanctuary groups in partnership with the Right to Remain team. Learn the key differences between legal advice vs legal support with practical activities to build confidence in using the Right to Remain Toolkit – a free, step-by-step online guide to the UK asylum and immigration system.


Supporting people to take an active role in their legal case
On Dec 11, join our interactive Right to Remain workshop, great for City of Sanctuary groups and people currently navigating the UK asylum system.


Wales Networking Meeting
Join the Wales City of Sanctuary network as we join forces and mobilise our networks across Wales to be speaking up for sanctuary. Come along to hear about Wales specific upcoming training and networking opportunities. Register here


Refugee Festival Scotland: Calling artists and graphic designers!
The festival are looking for fresh talent from artists with experience of forced migration. The successful artist will be paid a fee of £1,350 for this commission. Deadline 5th January. Find out more here


Lived Experience Career Development Webinar
The Refugee Council has collaborated across the sector and beyond to explore what meaningful career development for staff and volunteers with lived experience can look like. Join them on 9 Dec to find out more


Funded PhD opportunity
Northumbria University, School of Communities and Education, are inviting applicants for a funded PhD, Hidden borders: human rights in everyday healthcare practice. They welcome applications from people with lived experience of forced migration. Find out more
