Town and Parish Councils of Sanctuary Meeting Join us on April 24 at 12:00 for a session designed for Town and Parish Councils exploring or working towards the Council of Sanctuary award. At our sessions we will learn about the award process, share good practice and inspire one another to take action to welcome people seeking sanctuary. Local refugee groups working with their respective councils are also welcome to join the meeting.

Scholarship for Teachers of English as a Second Language to Refugees As part of its prestigious Hornby Scholarship programme, the A.S. Hornby Educational Trust is inviting applications from experienced teachers of English who are now working with refugee communities in the UK. The successful applicant will join a group of Hornby scholars from a range of different countries to study on a one-year Masters in TESOL at the University of Exeter in the academic year 2025/26. Make or break: learnings from Further Education Enrolment This new Refugee Education UK briefing presents practitioner-based insights from supporting young people from refugee and asylum-seeking backgrounds to enrol in further education. It highlights some of the barriers and challenges facing young sanctuary seekers in enrolling in further education institutions, and identifies examples of good practice. It presents top tips for colleges to help make enrolment a smoother, more inclusive and accessible experience for young refugee students.

Sanctuary Runners To mark the 10-year anniversary of Brighton being awarded a City of Sanctuary, 44 members of the UK’s first Sanctuary Runners group will take part in the 2025 Brighton Marathon Weekend. Sanctuary Runners is a solidarity-through-sport movement that was founded in Ireland in 2018 to bring communities together through running, with a focus on supporting asylum seekers and refugees. In 2024, a Sanctuary Runners arm was launched in Brighton through the Brighton Table Tennis Club – the first of its kind in the UK. Later this year a national Sanctuary Runners GB organisation will be launched in England and Wales, with more groups to be added nationwide. Find out more here
Power of Sport Toolkit This toolkit is a free Sport England funded digital learning resource designed in collaboration with StreetGames. The toolkit has been developed to help those designing, delivering and evaluating sports programmes to create inclusive, impactful programmes that bring people together, bridge divides, and foster a sense of belonging.

UNESCO RIELA Spring School 2025:The Arts of Integrating This year the Spring School will focus on peacebuilding, specifically using arts, languages and education. For 2025, they invite proposals which explore how to build peace in the minds of people, how to live together peacefully, restoratively and interculturally, how to respond to and counteract current events worldwide that seek to divide societies, and how to ensure that peace prevails, founded on justice.
